Foundations of Interior Design

SUSAN J. Slotkis is an interior designer, educator, author and industry expert grounded in a background in human services and communication. She holds three degrees, all with honors: Master’s in Social Services from Boston University, Bachelor’s of Art from State University of New York at Albany, and Associate’s of Art and Science from Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY.

For over 25 years, her interior design firm PROFILES – PERSONALIZED INTERIORS has been known for involving the client in the process. While her firm is Manhattan-based, projects have included homes for clients in the greater Metro area, Florida and California.

Active in the NY Metro Chapter of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), in 2011 Susan was recognized with the highest honor bestowed by ASID on a local level as ASID Chapter Medalist. She previously served twice on their Board of Directors and as Editor-in-Chief and chair of student career and scholarship events for many years. She is the recipient of five Presidential Citations. She also served as Director at Large on the National Board of the International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA), and as Branding Director of its NY Chapter. Susan received the Barbara Brock Grant from the IFDA Education Foundation for her seminars. Ms. Slotkis is an Educator Affiliate of IDEC, the Interior Design Educators Council.

For more than a decade she has developed and taught seminars and courses for colleges and industry. These programs have focused on topics of design including color, history of styles, accessories, decorative arts, sourcing, and business practices. Two of Susan’s courses are approved for CEU credits by IDCEC.

Currently adjunct assistant professor at Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY and instructor at NYU. Her students range from recent high school grads aspiring to be designers to career changers and those just thirsting to learn. Her success has been built on her ability to weave design concepts and trends within the context of art, culture, history, and lifestyle to encourage students to take a broader view of life and style.

As an industry expert her advice and opinions are sought for editorial content. She has been interviewed by the NY Observer, Accessories Merchandising, Home Design News, Elan among others. Design for the Rest of Us is her column on design, events and trends. Susan has served on industry and school juries and panels.
